Bjoern Saetren is one of the Norwegian farmers who participates in the SpermVital trial. He believes this can be a revolution for farmers who struggle with heat and frtility problems in cows.
SpermVital semen – makes timing of insemination less critical
Through several years of research Geno's scientists in cooperation with Sintef, the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia, have developed SpermVital semen.
This new technology adds a new dimension to artificial insemination development through immobilizing the sperm cells in a natural substance. This immobilization process preserves the energy in the sperm cells and enables a controlled release of the sperms in the uterus over and extended period of time. For the farmer this means making the timing of the insemination less critical as well as reducing the number of inseminations per pregnancy.
The Sperm Vital semen requires the same insemination equipment and technique as with regular semen.
Extensive trials
In the last few years, several insemination trials have been conducted at the same time as the lab research. The most important trial thus far was conducted in August and September 2009.
Geno's researchers have been working intensely to further improve the product ever since the field trial in the autumn. Based on laboratory results, it appears that we have succeeded. A new field trial is therefore being conducted in Norway in order to iron out the last remaining details, specifically regarding how the semen behaves during insemination. Results from this latest field trial will be available in June 2010.
