Until now, most dairy breeders have continued with "pure breeds", but interest in cross breeding dairy cattle has recently been fueled by demand from commercial dairy farmers, looking for alternatives to milk "at any cost". Dairy farmers are now looking for profitable, healthier, longer lasting cattle. Cross breeding can provide this through a number of proven benefits:
- Eliminate inbreeding
- More robust calves and cows
- Lower replacement rates
- Improved reproductive performance
- Increased bull calf value
These benefits are the result of hybrid vigour and using other breeds that can add particular strengths to the herd.
Will cross breeding solve all problems?
Crossbreeding will not correct management and nutrition problems. However as research has proven: "When conditions are not ideal, the increased robustness of crossbreeds can lead to increased profitability."
